The authors studied a nonrandom national sample of 70 intimate partner homicides. Five primary types of confessions within intimate partner homicide were identified: Confession to a Non-Law Enforcement Individual, Voluntary-Spontaneous Confession, Evidence-Based Confession, Suicide Note Confession, and Confession Involving a Claim of Self-Defense. Implications for practical application of the study results by law enforcement are discussed.
